In reality, shock treatment or ECT is not illegal anywhere. In the US, shock doctors have successfully fought every effort by the states keep a tally. Its likely that several hundred thousand patients are shocked each year in America, including some children. Nearly all psychiatric hospitals and psychiatric wards have shock machines. Shock treatment is very remunerative. A shock doctor can make more in one hour than a therapist can make in a day. Protests against shock treatment are going on right now in Canada, Ireland, and the US. An international organization called mindfreedom has been fighting involuntary shock treatment (www.mindfreedom.org). In Minnesota a 55-year-old man is being forced by the courts to come from his home to the hospital for his shock treatment. However, force is rarely required after the first or second treatment, because the brain-injured patient becomes compliant and does whatever he is told.
